The Hermès Kelly traces its origins to the 1930s, when Robert Dumas designed a structured women’s handbag distinguished by its trapezoidal shape, single top handle, flap, straps, and turn-lock closure. The design became closely associated with Grace Kelly after she was photographed carrying the bag in 1956, and Hermès subsequently gave it the Kelly name in her honor.

Since then, the Kelly has appeared in a range of sizes, materials, colors, and interpretations while retaining the design elements that define its silhouette. Variations include different proportions and constructions, but the single handle, structured form, fastening straps, turn-lock, padlock, and clochette remain closely associated with the Kelly line.
