The Hermès Birkin was created in 1984 following a chance encounter between Jean-Louis Dumas and actress and singer Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. Their conversation led Dumas to sketch a spacious rectangular bag designed around her need for a practical carryall, giving rise to the model that would take her name.

The Birkin has since appeared in several sizes, including the Birkin 25, 30, 35, and 40, as well as in a variety of leathers, colors, and interpretations. Across these variations, the design retains its structured shape, double handles, flap closure, and signature belted front.
