Understanding Richard Mille Rafael Nadal Watches (part 1)

Richard Mille timepieces are renowned for their exclusivity and high price tags, serving as status symbols for the successful few. While beyond the reach of most enthusiasts, they hold a special allure for the ultra-wealthy, especially elite athletes. These watches aren't just for show; they're designed to withstand the rigors of gameplay, exemplified by the collaboration between Richard Mille and tennis legend Rafael Nadal. Since their partnership 2010, a series of robust Richard Mille Rafael Nadal watches has emerged from the Swiss factory, crafted to endure the demands of one of the greatest players. This marks the initial entry in an ongoing exploration of significant Richard Mille timepieces, both past and present. Stay tuned for an in-depth look at Richard Mille Rafael Nadal watches.

The First Richard Mille Rafael Nadal Watch: RM 027 Tourbillon (2010)

In 2008, Richard Mille approached Rafael Nadal to discuss creating a watch in his honor. Initially hesitant about wearing a timepiece while playing tennis, Nadal eventually embraced the idea. Two years later, the RM 027 Tourbillon “Rafael Nadal” was unveiled, marking the beginning of a series of watches in collaboration with Nadal.

Designed specifically for the tennis court, the RM 027 watch combines a delicate tourbillon with durability. Crafted from black carbon composite, titanium, and a lithium-based alloy, it boasts both strength and lightness. Upon its release in 2010, it held the title of the world's lightest watch, weighing only 20g with the rubber strap, and commanded a price of CHF 510,000.

Despite its rarity in the market, estimates suggest the RM 027's value exceeds $1.2 million. Notably, after Nadal's victory at the French Open in 2012, his cherished RM 027 was stolen but swiftly recovered, prompting a joyful response from the tennis star.

RM 035 Rafael Nadal (2011)

Introduced in 2011, the RM 035 stands as a notable creation within Richard Mille's Rafael Nadal collection, often dubbed the "Baby Nadal" models. This timepiece marked the inaugural integration of Chronofiable® certification, subjecting it to a rigorous test simulating six months of wear in just 21 days.

Crafted with a sleek tonneau-shaped case fashioned from alumagnesium—a robust alloy melding aluminum, magnesium, and copper—the RM 035 ensures both durability and lightweight resilience against pressure and high temperatures.

Originally priced at $85,000 upon its debut, the RM 035 Rafael Nadal has ascended in value over the years, commanding over $200,000 in today's secondary market.

RM 27-01 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal (2013)

Three years following the debut of the original Richard Mille Rafael Nadal tourbillon, the RM 27-01 made its entrance, boasting even lighter construction at a mere 18.83 grams, including the Velcro strap. This model claimed the title of the world's lightest watch upon its 2013 release.

To achieve this featherweight status, Richard Mille utilized a carbon composite with a high concentration of carbon nanotubes for the case, resulting in a striking mottled anthracite hue. The tonneau case is marginally smaller than its predecessor, with a polycarbonate crystal.

A notable feature of the RM 27-01's movement, comprised of titanium and aluminum-lithium components, is its attachment to the case via four braided steel cables measuring a mere 0.35 mm in diameter. This construction method enhances flexibility, strength, and overall lightness. Richard Mille claims the RM 27-01 Tourbillon can withstand accelerations exceeding 5,000 g.

Limited to just 50 pieces, the RM 27-01 commanded a retail price of $690,000 in 2013. By 2022, Christie’s auction house achieved a sale of one unit for CHF 1,254,000 (approximately $1.3 million).

RM 35-01 Rafael Nadal (2014)

In 2014, Richard Mille unveiled the RM 35-01 as the successor to the "Baby Nadal" line, featuring a skeletonized manual-winding movement upgraded to the Caliber RMUL3. The key innovation lies in its Carbon TPT case, a material introduced by the brand the previous year, employing Thin Ply Technology developed with North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT). Carbon TPT comprises ultra-thin layers of carbon fiber impregnated with resin and cured under high pressure and heat, resulting in a material with an optimal strength-to-density ratio and a distinctive Damascene steel-like pattern. The initial retail price for the RM 35-01 Rafael Nadal watch in 2014 was $130,000, while current secondary market prices typically range from $250,000 to $350,000.
